Newport News Public Schools
Newport News, VA

The Newport News Public School System realized the need for a consolidated technology plan for its 47 schools. The NNPS vision was to create a long-term relationship with a systems integrator to implement a uniform and scalable voice, video, and data infrastructure across the district. To choose the best company for the task, NNPS issued an RFP outlining all of the district's technology needs.

DSI was the successful proposing firm in the largest single K-12 educational technology project to be launched in Virginia's history. Since April of 1998, we have completed 21 sites including the district's new administration building. DSI designed and configured the total solution. Phase 1 of the project included a Voice, Video, Data, Control, and Security Cabling infrastructure for each site; Layer 3 switching at the core of each LAN and switched 10Mbps to each desktop. VLAN configurations protect administrative information from the student network with the ability for all users to share network printers and other resources. A broadband cable television system at each site is integrated with the City's Institutional CATV network providing for local school channels meshed with citywide channels broadcast from the City's Telecommunications Center. Television monitors are installed in each classroom and wired for the future deployment of a district-wide media asset management system. Local Video Bulletin Board systems can be integrated with a district central system so that local and administrative announcements can be delivered to every classroom in real time.
