Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) wanted to demonstrate the feasibility of using distance learning to enable students to participate in classes where previously not available. Starting in February 1999, DSI designed, installed and began supporting Distance Learning Systems in 3 of Virginia Beach's High Schools in a pilot project with Cox Communications. Cox Communications and DSI were thereafter awarded a long-term contract to expand distance learning throughout the district. Today, all VBCPS high schools have an active Distance Learning classroom. DSI also designed and installed a world-class Presentation/Distance Learning system in the VBCPS school administration building's Einstein Lab. The next phase adds 5 middle schools. The design utilizes Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) to place multiple independent services on the same fiber optic network leveraging the city's investment in fiber deployment and current services. This unique system delivers real-time, uncompressed, full-motion video and audio with remote control across existing fiber optic networks utilizing DWDM technology. The system also has the ability to connect with organizations outside the VBCPS network via standards-based CODECS. |
